This site is for older adults and the people who love them. If a seventy-eight-year-old with tired eyes and a mild tremor cannot comfortably read and use it, we have failed at our own front door. So accessibility here is not a compliance page; it is the design brief.
Our commitment
- The site targets WCAG 2.2 AA as a floor, not a ceiling.
- Every page works with keyboard alone, with screen readers, and at 200% zoom without breaking.
- We test with real older adults, not just automated checkers.
- If anything on this site is hard for you to read or use, tell us and we will fix it. That is a request we answer personally.
Design standards for this site (governing; builder applies site-wide)
Type.
- Base body text at least 18px (1.125rem), preferably 19–20px. Nothing interactive or informational below 16px, including footers and captions.
- A high-legibility humanist face with generous x-height and open letterforms; no thin or light weights anywhere (400 minimum body, 600+ for emphasis). Avoid condensed faces.
- Line height 1.6–1.7 for body text; line length 60–75 characters; paragraph spacing over indentation.
Color and contrast, tuned for aging eyes.
- Body text contrast at least 7:1 (AAA-level), but not pure black on pure white, which glares for tired eyes: near-black ink (around
#1a1a1a–#222) on a warm off-white ground (around #faf8f5–#f5f2ec). The June palette’s warm tones are the right instinct; verify every pairing. - Never light gray text. The fashionable
#767676-style secondary text is the single most common failure for older readers. Secondary text stays at 4.5:1 minimum against its background. - Never color alone to carry meaning; links underlined, not just tinted. Blue-family hues chosen mindful of age-related blue-yellow discrimination loss.
Interaction.
- Touch and click targets at least 44×44px with real spacing between them. Steady hands are not a requirement for using this site.
- Visible, high-contrast focus states on everything interactive.
- No motion that isn’t requested: no autoplaying video, no carousels, no parallax, no animation beyond gentle transitions, and
prefers-reduced-motion honored fully. - Forms: labels always visible (never placeholder-only), errors in words next to the field, nothing timed.
Structure.
- One
h1 per page, honest heading order, skip-to-content link, alt text that says what the image is for. - Plain-language URLs and link text (“See what it does”, never “click here”).
